A Canada Day weekend event in 91原创 City drew close to 600 competitors to Al Anderson pool for the annual 91原创 Flippers Swim Club Invitation held July 1-2.

Mandy Whiddington, a 91原创 Flippers Swim Club board member and volunteer, said ages ranged from six-year-old swimmers appearing in their first meet to seasoned master-level competitors , with athletes coming from as far away as Hope.

鈥淲e have 575 athletes coming from 13 clubs from a variety of regions,鈥� Whiddington told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥淭his is the first event of the season where we have finals, so the top eight swimmers in each division get to swim a final race which prepares them for regionals and provincials [competitions],鈥� Whiddington explained.

91原创 Flippers Swim Club finished third overall, with 15 members recording top-three finishes.

They included wins by Brielle Woodruff in girls division eight (first in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, and 50m butterfly), Rose Esplen in girls division seven, who won the 50m freestyle, Niko Zanatta in the boys鈥� division five, who was first in the 100m breaststroke, Bodhi Pettifer recording a double win in the boys six and under 25m butterfly and breaststroke events, and Briar Gemmil in the girls six and under 25m butterfly.

For more than 50 years, the non-profit 91原创 Flippers summer swim club has offered professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities, from novice to provincial-level competitor.

Run by an elected volunteer board of directors, the club is a member of the BC Summer Swimming Association, part of the Fraser Valley region.
