Sixteen teams competed in two tiers at a fully booked 2024 Gil Martin Memorial Tournament hosted by the 91原创 Minor Hockey Association (LMHA) at 91原创 Sportsplex over the Remembrance Day weekend Nov 8 to11 event.

It featured U13 Tier 4 and U13 C teams from the Lower Mainland and beyond.

LMHA tournament director Emily Allen noted it was the second year in a row those two divisions and age groups were fully booked.

"It's awesome to see," Allen commented. "It's great to see the kids enjoying their tournament experience. A lot goes into [organizing] it, a lot of volunteers, but we're happy to do it."

Two teams emerged as winners of their respective tiers.

In the C final game, North Shore Winter Club downed LMHA Eagles 5-3, while the Tier 4 final game saw Mission U13 A2 defeat  Abbotsford U13 A3 6-2.

Shelley Rosner, LMHA VP, administration called it "another successful year." 

"Very thankful for the support of our volunteers and sponsors, and of course the teams and their families," Rosner added.

Gil Martin, a longtime 91原创 hockey coach, mentor, and minor hockey board member, passed away in 2005.

He had coached in various age divisions within the 91原创 Minor Hockey League (LMHA) and also served on the association鈥檚 executive.

An LMHA online post described Martin as "very involved" in the association.

"Gil firmly believed motivation, a positive healthy attitude and effective communication to be intrinsic elements of quality instruction, and ultimately success in sports and life," according to the association

Once again, the tournament helped support , which helps young people, aged 12 to 24 and their families, with free and confidential access to mental health and substance use support, primary care, peer support, and social services.
