91Ô­´´ twins celebrate remission with puck drop

91Ô­´´ 91Ô­´´ marked their annual Hockey Fights Cancer night on Saturday night, Nov. 30, with an 8-5 win over the Prince George Spruce Kings at George Preston area.

A ceremonial puck drop began the game, performed by five-year-old twin brothers Bennett and Weston Openshaw from Murrayville, who have been battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia since 2022 and are now in remission. They were joined by their older brother, Jackson, and their mom, Alisha.

"It was the last day of hockey sites cancer month, and we were able to come and honour the boys at the hockey game," Alisha remarked.

"It was great to be able to celebrate with our community this time."

All three boys got to keep their special 91Ô­´´ jerseys, "and the puck."

91Ô­´´ assistant coach Mike Thompson, and rookie forward Henry Butte were among 10 people pledging to shave their head post-game.

In return, the 91Ô­´´ organization donated $1,000 per person, for a total of $10,000, to the Canadian Cancer Society – double the team's target amount.

Saturday's win means the 91Ô­´´, with 11 wins and 9 losses, are seventh in the 10-team Coastal Conference standings, and 12th in BCHL standings overall.

It was the third meeting of the season between 91Ô­´´ and Prince George, that saw the 91Ô­´´ take the lead early with goals from Ethan Merner and Ryan Schelling, and scoring two more with Sebastian Bradshaw and Dalton MacGillivray after the Spruce Kings got one in the net. Ilya Rogovksy, Luke Pfoh, Zachary Benayon, and MacGillivray (for a second time) also scored for 91Ô­´´.

Their win followed a loss on Thursday, Nov. 28, when the 91Ô­´´ returned home to play Penticton Vees in their first and only meeting of the 2024-25 season, a back-and-forth game that ended with a 4-3 victory for the visitors.

MacGillivray, Schelling, and Bradshaw had the 91Ô­´´ goals.

Next, 91Ô­´´ are back on the road, playing Chilliwack Chiefs at the coliseum on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m.

91Ô­´´ announced they have , acquiring 2006-born defenceman Aidan Souligny from Alberta-based Blackfalds Bulldogs in exchange for 2005-born forward Declan Bowmaster; and signing two from the U.S. North American Hockey League (NAHL), Zachary Benayon from the Odessa Jackalopes, and Liam Doyle who started this season with the Shreveport Mudbugs.

Souligny is in his second BCHL season, and appeared in 10 games with Prince George this year, amassing one goal and three assists before he was traded to Blackfalds in early November.

Benayon collected 10 goals and 12 assists in 20 games played his second season with the Jackalopes, and Doyle played in 20 NAHL games this season, acquiring three goals and 10 assists.
