It was a rough opening night for the Trinity Western Spartans women's volleyball team.
The Spartans opened the pre-season with a 3-0 defeat to the host Seattle University Redhawks at the Connolly Centre.
"The unforced errors really cost us and we gave Seattle way too many free points and it was tough to battle back after giving them so many points," said Trinity Western coach Ryan Hofer.
"It is a learning curve for us realizing what we need to get better at and where we need to improve.
鈥淲e have to go through the learning process. It is a new team and a new year. We have to put in the time here and fix what we need to get better at,鈥 added Hofer. 鈥淎 good effort tonight, but we have a road ahead of us and we need to get better each day.鈥
Amy Leschied led the Spartans with 10 kills, while Alicia Perrin finished with seven kills in 10 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage along with four total blocks. Chelsea Hudson collected 23 assists, and libero Jodi Neufeld led all players with nine defensive digs in the contest.
Next up for the Spartans is Oct. 14 when they will host the UBC-Okanagan Heat in the first match of the West Coast Classic. The Spartans will continue the tournament Oct. 15-16 at the University of British Columbia.
