The Trinity Western Spartans lost their Canada West season opener 1-0 on Saturday at Rogers Field to the visiting UBC Thunderbirds.

The Spartans women鈥檚 team fell 1-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at Rogers Park.

Rachel Sawer scored in the 65th minute for the visitors and Alyssa Williamson made nine saves for UBC as the Spartans outshot their opponent 9-6.

鈥淚 just didn鈥檛 think we played very well,鈥 said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh.

鈥淚t took us until they scored before we really got going and had some intensity. Our back line was great but we couldn鈥檛 get much else happening. We had some chances late but couldn鈥檛 bury them. You have to give credit to their goalie but when you鈥檙e shooting the ball right at the keeper it鈥檚 hard to score.鈥

After the game's start was delayed for more than an hour because of late-arriving officials, both teams were sluggish in the early going.

But by the half, UBC had outshot Trinity Western 9-1, although only three of the shots were on target.

It looked as if both teams were playing for the draw, but that changed when Sawer 鈥 who had come close in the first half 鈥 made no mistake her second time, blasting home a shot over a leaping Kristen Funk, with the ball hitting the crossbar and deflecting in.

After falling behind, the Spartans began pushing the pace as they looked for the equalizer.

Trinity Western had 12 of their 14 shots over the final 25 minutes, but could not solve the UBC keeper.

Williamson finished with nine saves.

The Spartans will look for their first Canada West victory this weekend as they host the Manitoba Bisons on Sept. 16 and the Regina Cougars on Sept. 17. Both games are at 5 p.m. at Rogers Field.
