It was a weekend split for the Trinity Western Spartans in the provincial capital.

The men's hockey team stretched their winning streak to three games with a 4-2 victory on Friday against the host Vikes before losing the rematch 10-5 the next night.

Victoria holds a six-point advantage for fourth place in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League standings.

In Friday's game, the Spartans had to rally with three third-period goals to earn the two points.

Robert Vos scored an unassisted goal to give Trinity Western its first lead and Trevor Edwards iced the victory with an empty-net goal.

Brendan Elenko and Josh Stephenson had the other Spartan goals.

John-Paul Chapman made 25 saves for the win.

But on Saturday night, the Vikes scored five times in the first period and the deficit was too much to overcome.

"It was a tough one," commented Trinity Western coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. "We had some bad breaks and gave up five early goals, but we fought back and chipped away."

Sam Ahlgren scored for the Spartans to make it 5-1 after 20 minutes, but the Vikes stretched the lead to 7-1 after 40 minutes.

The Spartans did outscore their hosts 4-3 in the third, with Brandon Long, Brendan Stephan, Elenko and Vos.

The team wraps up the regular season this weekend on the road for a pair against the Selkirk Saints.

The BCIHL playoffs run March 23-27 at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
