TWU basketball: Spartans set new wins mark

Men's basketball team eclipses single-season win record with 21

The Trinity Western Spartans set a new program record with 21 victories.

The men's basketball team reached that number after posting a pair of dominant victories, 101-68 and 103-76, over the weekend in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons.

The Spartans, ranked fourth in the country, finished the Canada West regular season at 21-3 and can finish no worse than second place.

They will host a Canada West best-of-three playoff series at home against either Manitoba (9-13), Calgary (8-14) or Fraser Valley (8-14), depending on this weekend's results.

Trinity Western would also need UBC (20-2) to lose both of its games at Victoria (15-7) in order to snag the Canada West's top seed.

In Saturday's win, the Spartans raced out to a 38-9 lead after 10 minutes. The Bisons would challenge and cut the deficit to nine points in the third quarter, but from there, Trinity Western took over again to win by 27.

"Our first quarter solidified the game for us," said coach Scott Allen. "But it was great to have balanced scoring and getting everyone playing time is great for us as we head into the playoffs so that they can contribute when we need them to."

Calvin Westbrook and Tristan Smith led the offensive charge, each scoring 24 points.

One of the keys was the team's shooting percentage, as they made more than half their attempts, shooting a sizzling 55.4 per cent.

Friday's game was more of the same. Trinity Western led 50-18 at the half to cruise to the win.

The Spartans had five players in double digits, including Jacob Doerksen and Daniel Horner, who each had 15 points. Kyle Coston also knocked down 13 points.

Trinity Western's playoff series runs February 24-26.
