Third-period eruption leads to Thunder win

A dominant third period pushed the 91Ô­´´ Thunder past the Maple Ridge Burrards.

The senior A lacrosse team exploded for five goals in the final 20 minutes as they defeated the visiting Burrards 11-6 on Saturday night at the 91Ô­´´ Events Centre.

91Ô­´´ was also in action the night before, falling 11-7 to the host Burnaby Lakers.

The weekend split leaves the Thunder with a 3-5-1 mark in Western Lacrosse Association action.

Saturday’s victory was a back-and-forth affair.

The Thunder took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission before building a 5-1 advantage. Maple Ridge responded with the next four goals to tie the score, before 91Ô­´´ added one more prior to the end of the second period, and then scored five of the game’s final six goals.

Athan Iannucci led the way with four goals and an assist.

Patrick Saunder and Alex Turned had a goal and two assists apiece, while John Lintz, Dan Williams, Kyle Belton, Mike Grimes and Andrew Potter had a goal and a helper apiece.

Joe Bell stopped 44 shots for the victory.

Against the Lakers, Potter struck three times, while Williams had a goal and three helpers.

Iannucci, Ian Poole and Rob Van Beek had a goal apiece.

The Thunder play their next three games at home, beginning with Saturday’s (June 25) tilt against the New Westminster Salmonbellies (5-1-1).

In the most recent national senior A rankings, 91Ô­´´ earned an honourable mention.
