There鈥檚 a changing of the guard taking place in the local boxing scene.

And it鈥檚 happening in several weight divisions.

Julian Kim, the province鈥檚 dominant super middleweight champion over the past two-to-three years, left the amateurs and graduated to the pro ranks last month.

This Friday (May 19) at the 48th edition of the Clash at the Cascades at the Coast Hotel ballroom, boxing fans will find out who his successor will be, as two top-ranked super middleweights square off for the vacant B.C. title.

Will it be Tyson Gemby of Maple Ridge鈥檚 Carlson Gracies (Gemby is ranked No. 1 in the division), or will Port Kells鈥� Brendon Kim (ranked No. 2)?

鈥淏rendon Kim is no relation to Julian Kim, although many in boxing think they are brothers,鈥� said Clash at the Cascades promoter Dave Allison.

Gemby and Kim faced each other early last month and the bout ended in controversy.

Gemby won due to a disqualification in the third round. Kim had landed a right hand that dropped Gemby and the referee ruled Kim had thrown a second punch after Gemby was down.

鈥淭he fight was even up until this point and had been very competitive,鈥� Allison noted.

On Friday the speculation of what would have happened will be over and fans will see who will be the next B.C. super middleweight champion, Gemby or Kim.

Rising star Harkerat Nijjar of Bisla Boxing will take his undefeated record against another undefeated pugilist.

Steve Del Amidia of Island Boxing of Victoria takes his undefeated record into the fight with Nijjar.

Del Amidia is the No. 3-ranked cruiserweight in B.C. and Nijjar is ranked No. 5.

The match will be contested over four rounds.

Another bout of note will be a B.C. Youth title contest between Charlie Dawson of North Burnaby Boxing Club and Gavin Bisla of Bisla鈥檚 Boxing.

鈥淭hese are two outstanding junior boxers,鈥� Allison said.

Other outstanding juniors will be on the card including Leif Carnegie of Kelowna, Cody Hann of North Burnaby, and Nic Schufletoski of Kamloops.

91原创 Boxers Alex Veloz and Jack Choi will both be in action in the lightweight division.

The bouts take place at the Coast hotel next to the Cascades Casino in Downtown 91原创 on Friday May 19, with the matches getting underway at 7:30 p.m. and tickets at the door.

General admission is $40 and all kids 12 and under are admitted fee. Parking is free and there is a bar service at the venue.

Pucek to face 鈥楢frican Princess鈥� July 14

On July 14, 91原创 pro boxer Sarah Pucek will defend her British Commonwealth championship against African Helen Joseph at the Coast Hotel ballroom.

Known as the African Princess and holder of the IBF Intercontinental title, Joseph is the top-ranked African featherweight with a 13-3-1 record.

The Nigerian-born Joseph also sports a 47 per cent knock out rate, which will make for a very dangerous fight for Pucek.

The Commonwealth title is boxing鈥檚 oldest championship.

Allison, who is Pucek鈥檚 manager/trainer, says when you hold these titles, 鈥測ou have an obligation to defend them.鈥�

Pucek holds the Canadian championship, Commonwealth title and the North American Boxing Federation championship, which she won last April 7.

Pucek has been offered a world title shot against Sandy Tsaqouis that would take place Aug. 19 in Toronto.

Allison says he is 鈥渦nlikely to take the fight because it is at 130 pounds, a weight division above Pucek鈥檚 preferred weight of 126 pounds.
