They needed extra time after blowing a two-goal lead, but for the second straight season, the 91原创 FC Mustangs stopped Coquitlam Metro Ford in the Coastal Cup semifinals.
The Mustangs scored twice in extra time to win 4-2 and book a spot in the U18 B.C. Coastal Cup championship game against the Cliff Avenue United Synergy. The game will be played May 1 in Richmond.
In the semifinal, which was played on Sunday at Willoughby Park, 91原创 led 2-0 at the half on a pair of strikes from Tessa Loewen.
But within the first dozen minutes of the second half, Coquitlam struck twice.
The Mustangs got the eventual winner midway through the first extra time period, when the Coquitlam defence was unable to deal with a long ball and 91原创鈥檚 Alex Stasiuk was able to pounce on the loose ball on a breakaway, drilling a low shot into the net.
Loewen sealed the victory with her hat trick goal in the second extra time period off a goal mouth scramble.
Coach Shaun Mason thought his team got too comfortable when they were up two goals, and then were on their heels when the score was tied.
But to their credit, they weathered the storm and generated more scoring chances and were eventually awarded.
鈥淭he difference was our bench is deeper,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd in the end, I think that was the difference in the game, we were able to sub a good player with another good player, but Coquitlam was forced to keep their best players on the field for the entire 120 minutes.鈥
In addition to Loewen鈥檚 goal-scoring prowess, something she has shown all season, Mason credited the play of centre-back Dayle Jeras, and right-back Dakota Reid.
Reid was seeing her first game action since January and played 70 minutes.
Ashley Radomski also earned the coach鈥檚 praise as she played all 120 minutes.
In the U15 Coastal B semifinals, 91原创 FC K-OS fell 1-0 to the West Vancouver Spuraways.
