Spartans set to represent Canada

Two volleyball players on Team Canada, while six soccer players and coach wearing Maple Leaf

Two members of the Trinity Western Spartans women’s volleyball team will wear the Maple Leaf this summer.

Spartans setter Lauren O’Reilly, who is from 91Ô­´´, has earned a spot on Canada’s senior national team which is looking to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

This is her third time representing Canada, most recently having suited up in the red and white at last fall’s world championships.

Canada West rookie of the year and Canadian Interuniversity Sport Alicia Perron, who is from Creston, will play middle for Canada’s senior B team at the FISU (World University) Games.

That competition runs Aug. 12-23 in China.

The Spartans women’s soccer team will also be well represented at the FISU Games, with six players, and head coach Graham Roxburgh, being named to the squad.

Goalkeeper Kristen Funk, defenders Jilian Dietrich and Kristen Santema, midfielders Natalie Boyd and Melissa Mobilio, and forward Nikki Wright, were all named to the squad.

Wright, who is from Cloverdale, is a 91Ô­´´ Secondary graduate and played her youth soccer with 91Ô­´´ FC.
