The Trinity Western Spartans struck for three goals and very easily could have added to that total had it not been for the goalkeeping for Regina鈥檚 Michelle Anderson.
The Spartans women鈥檚 soccer team controlled from the start on Saturday afternoon on their home pitch at Rogers Field, downing the Regina Cougars 3-0.
Daniela Gerig and Jennifer Castillo scored in the first half and Jessica King added an early second-half goal.
In total, the Spartans fired 27 shots, 13 of which were on target, and Anderson finished with 10 saves.
鈥淚 thought our possession and ball control was excellent,鈥 said coach Graham Roxburgh.
鈥淓verybody had the jump that you look for.鈥
Jenna Di Nunzio set up the first two goals while Alicia Tesan was the playmaker on the third.
鈥淭here were a lot of subs who came on and gave us a spark,鈥 Castillo said.
鈥(And) we finished the chances we had.鈥
The win came on the heels of a 4-1 home victory on Friday night against the Manitoba Bisons.
Melissa Mobilio opened the scoring with the only goal of the first half.
Gerig doubled the lead in the second half before Manitoba鈥檚 Carrie Nash got the Bisons on the board.
But seven minutes later, Castillo restored the two-goal lead and Tessa Meyer rounded out the scoring.
The players spoke about putting their opening weekend home loss behind them.
鈥淚 think we learned from what we did last weekend,鈥 Di Nunzio said.
鈥淲e just played a lot better; we had passion and energy.鈥
Kristen Funk was in goal for both games.
Trinity Western improved to 2-1-0 as they head out on the road for the first time. The team is in Edmonton on Saturday and Saskatoon on Sunday.
