Silver lining for Titans

91原创 Fundamental places second at junior girls championships

After winning an emotion-filled semifinal match, the 91原创 Fundamental Titans ran out of gas in the provincial championship final.

The Titans wound up winning the silver medal at the junior girls鈥 volleyball championships on Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval, losing 2-0 to the South Delta Sun Devils.

Just a few days prior, the Titans had defeated South Delta in the Fraser Valley championship final.

In the provincial semifinals, the Titans defeated Pacific Academy, the first time they had beaten their Surrey rivals.

鈥淲e played the best game we have ever played against them, it was just amazing,鈥 said 91原创 Fundamental coach Laura O鈥橰eilly.

During that match, O鈥橰eilly called timeout after finding out 91原创 Fundamental鈥檚 junior boys team had won gold at their provincial championships in Abbotsford.

The news of the boys鈥 teams success seemed to give the Titans a little something extra.

鈥淚t was such an emotional high,鈥 O鈥橰eilly said.

鈥淭hey played with such heart; it was all us from that point on.鈥

But with little recovery time after that match, the Titans went right into the provincial final.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think we had anything left,鈥 O鈥橰eilly said.

鈥淲e just ran out of gas and South Delta is a very good team.鈥

The Titans battled hard but the Sun Devils seemed to have an answer for every hit.

鈥淭o their credit, (South Delta) does everything well,鈥 O鈥橰eilly said.

And while they may not have won the gold medal, the coach was amazed at just how special the team and the season were.

Hannah Beaton and Brie O鈥橰eilly earned all-star awards for the Titans.
