A pair of fifth-inning doubles helped snap a tie and send the 91Ô´´ 11/12 Selects to the bronze medal.

The team of 11 and 12-year-olds from the 91Ô´´ Baseball Association was competing at the District 3 Selects tournament last week (July 18 to 23) defeating Whalley 8-5 in the third-place game.

The four-team tournament was hosted by the White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association.

91Ô´´ led 5-0 through the first four and a half innings, but saw that lead disintegrate in the bottom of the fourth.

But rather than hang their heads, the Pirates dug deep and came up with a three-run inning to take the lead for good.

David Boss ripped an RBI double to give 91Ô´´ the lead for good and Eliott Diaz followed that up with an RBI double of his own.

Ryder Galye got the start on the mound, pitching the first three innings with Matthew Farrell coming on in relief. The pair combined for seven strikeouts.

Dylan Johnston, Lucas Gamache and Brackton Keller had stellar games on defence, coming up with some great fielding, snagging deep fly balls to keep the Whalley offence at bay.

Offensively, the team was led by Zack Rickey, who went three-for-three — including a home run — and drove in four runs while Keller had a two-run triple.

Rickey, Keller, Bryce Gustavson and Ryan Poirier each had multi-hit games for the victors.

The victory capped off a tough tournament for 91Ô´´ as they went 0-3 in round robin play.

91Ô´´ lost 13-12 in a walk-off win for Whalley to open the tournament and then fell 9-0 to White Rock in game two. The Selects had an early lead in their final round-robin game but lost 13-3 to Coquitlam.

Coquitlam again topped 91Ô´´, this time 15-8, in the semifinals.
