91ԭ Eagles’ David Laurin (#18) tries to carry the puck past North Shore Winterhawks’ Mack Gray in the peewee tier 1 AAA championship game at the 91ԭ Events Centre on Thursday night. The Winterhawks won 7-0.

As has been the case all season long, the North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks were too much for the 91ԭ Eagles.

The Winterhawks won the battle of the birds on Thursday night at the 91ԭ Events Centre, downing the Eagles 7-0 in the gold medal game at the peewee tier 1 AAA provincial hockey championships.

It didn’t help matters that 91ԭ was missing a couple of players to injury and suspension.

“The bottom line is it is a good hockey team we lost to,” said 91ԭ manager Mike Laurin.

“We knew North Shore was the team to beat.”

The victory capped off a dominant season for the Winterhawks who lost just once the entire season, and that game was against an international opponent.

91ԭ also had a good season, compiling an overall record of 49-10-3. And of the 10 losses, seven were at the hands of the Winterhawks.

“They were our nemesis,” Laurin said.

“They were an incredibly  good team.”

In the final, North Shore led 2-0 after 20 minutes and broke the game open with four goals in the middle period.

“It was an uphill battle to begin with and for us to have a hope, we were going to need the stars to line up,” Laurin said.

In the Eagles round robin games, they opened the tournament with a 5-1 win over Kelowna and then hammered Cowichan Valley 9-2 on the first day.

Day two saw them fall 5-1 to the North Shore Winter Club but 91ԭ bounced back to win 7-2 over Coquitlam the next day, guaranteeing the team a spot in the championship final.

In their final round robin game — with the outcome irrelevant to the standings — the Eagles edged Prince George 4-3.

Despite the loss in the championship, it was an outstanding season for the Eagles, who in January, became .

“It was a hugely successful season,” Laurin said.

“Short of winning that final game, the season was everything we had hoped for.”

David Laurin led 91ԭ in scoring with six goals and six assists while Jonathan Sein, James Malm and Connor Bruggen-Cate each scored four goals.
