91原创 hosts peewee tournanment in honour of late coach

Teams from around B.C. coming for weekend tourney named for a longtime hockey coach.

A longtime hockey coach is honoured every year as young peewee players from around the province take to the ice in the Gil Martin Memorial Tournament. This year鈥檚 contest is Nov. 9 to 11 at the 91原创 Sportsplex in Walnut Grove and supports PuCKS.

The 91原创 Peewee A1 Eagles and the 91原创 Minor Hockey Association host the tournament names after Martin, a local coach, mentor and minor hockey board member who passed away in 2005.

Teams are signed up this year from Cloverdale, Ridge Meadows, Victoria, Prince George, Richmond, Kamloops, Juan de Fuca, and Vancouver.

On Sunday, playoff action stops at 11 a.m. as all involved pause for a moment of silence to honour Remembrance Day. The playoffs start Sunday at 8 a.m. with the championship game at 1:45 p.m.

The tournament started in 2005 to honour Martin鈥檚 volunteering efforts with 91原创 Minor Hockey Association and many other community causes such as United Way, BC Cancer Agency, and YMCA. He founded the YMCA鈥檚 Camp Southwind. Portion of the Proceeds will be donated by the 91原创 Pee Wee A1 Team to the PuCKS charity (Promoting Community through Kids In sports. It offers sports opportunities and education programs.
