While rust may have been an issue going into the boys鈥 U13 provincial soccer final on Saturday, 91原创 United quickly put that notion to rest.
鈥淲e started off quite strong, right from the get-go,鈥 said 91原创 United coach Scott Howey.
鈥淭he boys were definitely excited to play. It has been a long two-month layover we had.鈥
91原创 wrapped up their provincial berth at the end of April when they won the Coastal Cup.
But their opponent, the Kamloops Blaze, is in the midst of their soccer season.
The two soccer clubs squared off on Saturday, at Richmond鈥檚 Hugh Boyd Park, with 91原创 winning 3-0.
91原创 came out strong with three quality scoring chances in the first 15 minutes. While they were unable to capitalize, 91原创 maintained the pressure and were rewarded when Noah Owen struck in the 30th minute.
鈥淲e squashed any kind of momentum they had (with that goal),鈥 Howey said.
91原创 took the one-goal advantage into half-time and then put the game away with goals in the fifth and 15th minutes of the second half. Joel Harrison and Wyatt Gilbert had the goals.
Defensively, 91原创 gave Kamloops little opportunity to mount an attack as the Blaze managed just one shot on goal.
鈥淭he boys did really well to play,鈥 Howey said. 鈥淜amloops looked to try and spring everything over the top, in behind our back four.
鈥淲e knew they were going to try that and we worked on plays similar to that.鈥
But the coaching staff was prepared for that strategy, and the 91原创 players took that option away.
Howey said it was rewarding to see the players follow the game plan so well.
鈥淭hey played the way we set out to play,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t just shows that if we put the preparation in on the training pitch, it shows the results you can have.鈥
Central midfielder Damon Schmidt earned player of the game honours.
鈥淗e was there to prevent them from going forward and he was passing the ball very nicely,鈥 Howey said. 鈥淗e moved the ball early and efficiently.鈥
