Valley West Hawks' captain Jordan Klimek battles for the puck along the boards with Cariboo Cougars' Tanner Fjellstrom during Major Midget Hockey play at the 91Ô´´ Events Centre on Oct. 8 and 9. The teams split the series, with the Hawks winning 4-1 while the Cougars prevailed in game two 7-2.

The Valley West Hawks maintained a share of first place after splitting a weekend set with the visiting Cariboo Cougars.

Both teams, along with the Greater Vancouver Canadians, lead the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League with 4-2 records through the season's first three weeks.

The Hawks — made up of players from 91Ô´´, Surrey, Cloverdale and White Rock —  won 4-1 on Saturday at the 91Ô´´ Events Centre, but the Cougars struck back with a 7-2 win on Sunday, also at the LEC.

In game one, Kyle Raymond and Danton Heinen scored 19 seconds apart in the first period and then Ryan Rensby added a goal early in the second.

The Cougars ruined the Hawks shutout bid midway through the third on a goal from Hayden James-Berra but Ram Brar scored as time wound down for the 4-1 final.

The Hawks fell behind 7-0 in the second game, with Daniell Lange and Jordan Klimek scoring third-period power play goals.
