Steven Hsu had 16 kills and four aces as he helped the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club to an impressive start to the season.
Hsu, a 91原创 Fundamental student, and his teammates took part in a pair of U14 tournaments in Surrey.
On Saturday at Pacific Academy in Surrey, the boys went 6 鈥� 0 defeating teams from White Rock (25-6, 25-5), Victoria (25-21, 25-19), their own Fraser Valley U13 brothers twice (25-20, 25-9 and 25-9, 25-6) and two teams from the host Force Volleyball Club (25-5, 25-4 and 25-9, 25-6)
Jordan Loewen (MEI Abbotsford) led the offense with 18 kills and 11 service aces. Chilliwack鈥檚 Mark Harrison (Mt. Slesse Middle) had 7 service aces and added 24 assists. Josiah Mooy (Surrey Christian) played a key role in his first ever tournament with the team with 15 kills, 8 service aces and 5 stuff blocks.
Sunday at Fraser Heights Secondary in Surrey the FVVC club got off to another great start once again defeating the Victoria Flyers (26-24, 25-14), then defeating Mission (25-12, 25-16) and the host Eagles (25-14, 25-23). In the semi-final they defeated White Rock (27-25, 25-13) but came up just short in the final in a rematch with Victoria (25-22, 15-25, 13-15), earning them a second place finish.
Ben Friesen (MEI, Abbotsford) and Chilliwack鈥檚 Levi Block(MEI) added 24 & 13 assists respectively. Jonah Swanson & Bryson Marazzi, both of MEI were the defensive leaders for the tournament, each with a dozen digs. Surrey鈥檚 Reese Frey (Clayton Heights Secondary) had 10 kills, 6 digs and one stuff block in a strong performance as well.
The team, which won silver last year at the U14 provincial club championships, will be the only U14 squad competing this weekend at the Air Attack Volleyball Club鈥檚 U16 Invitational in Richmond.
