Vancouver Giants鈥 outgoing head coach Michael Dyck will be taking a new job as an assistant coach to the AHL farm team for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dyck has stepped down from the post he鈥檚 held with the Giants since 2018, during which time he took the Giants to the 2019 WHL championship finals.

His new role will see him working with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

鈥淚 have been very fortunate to work in a first class organization with first class people who have made me better. And to be able to do this while living in the Lower Mainland has made it an amazing experience for myself and my family,鈥 Dyck said, offering thanks to the Giants fans, team and players, staff, and ownership.

鈥淢ichael Dyck will be a great asset to the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, as he was to the Giants,鈥 Giants general manager Barclay Parneta said. 鈥淲orking with Michael for the past five years and seeing his impact daily, it was clear that it was only a matter of time before his abilities would get recognized. He is an excellent coach that connects with his players. He will continue to succeed and positively impact the player鈥檚 and organization鈥檚 development wherever possible as he continues his coaching career.鈥

鈥淲hen we hired Michael in 2018, he was part of our original culture of the Giants winning programs,鈥 Giants majority owner and president Ron Toigo said. 鈥淲e brought him back to re-instill that and he did. In his first year he took us to the Western Hockey League Finals. The organization is in much better shape now than when he got here. We appreciate everything he did for us.鈥

Dyck鈥檚 WHL career began as a player, with 218 games from 1985-88, with the Regina Pats, Brandon Wheat Kings, and Calgary Wranglers.

In the 1990s, he began coaching in the league, working with the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Kootenay Ice, but his longest tenure before the Giants was with his hometown Lethbridge Hurricanes, where he was assistant coach from 1997 to 2002, and head coach from 2005-09.

He also worked with the Giants before becoming head coach, starting as an assistant coach from 2002-05, as a scout in the 2009-10 season, and as director of player development from 2010-12.

Internationally, he has been an assistant coach at the 2022 World Junior Championships (gold medal), the 2021 World Championships (gold medal), and the 2021 World Juniors (silver medal), as a head coach at the 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup (silver medal), and as an assistant coach at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games (silver medal).

From 2018-23, Dyck compiled a regular season record of 144-120-17-7 and a playoff record of 21-17 for Vancouver.
