Shooting Eagles improved to 2-0 with a win over the Grizzlies (1-1) while the Sea Spray (1-1) picked up their first win at the expense of the Black Fish (0-2) in week 2 of Arena Lacrosse League West Division action at the 91原创 Events Centre on Sunday, Nov. 17
Shooting Eagles 14 Grizzlies 5
Shooting Eagles held the Grizzlies scoreless for a stretch of 32:32 鈥 from midway in the second quarter all the way until the 8:15 mark of the fourth quarter 鈥 in a convincing 14-5 victory.
鈥淚t is nice holding a team to five goals,鈥 said Shooting Eagles coach Adam Smith. 鈥(But) I don鈥檛 think the score was very indicative of the game; I thought it was a very balanced game 鈥 we made the most of our shots.鈥
Aside from an early 1-0 deficit, it was all Eagles from that point forward as they lead 2-1 after 15 minutes and 6-3 at the half before breaking things open in the third with a 4-0 quarter.
Mark Yingling was the game鈥檚 first star following his five goal, eight-point performance while his teammates Dylan Lacroix and Keegan Kozack were the second and third stars, respectively, as each registered a hat trick. Lacroix added a trio of assists for the six-point game.
Garret Winter and Declan Fitzpatrick both had four assists in the victory and Tysen Nielsen (1-1), Lucas Parsons-Quintiao, and Gordon Walls-Good had a goal apiece. Goaltender Colin Jeffrey made 39 saves on 44 shots.
Smith was happy the team cleaned up some of their struggles with moving the ball cleanly, as well as the fact they did a better job in executing their new defensive systems.
鈥淲e adapted to our new system well,鈥 said Shooting Eagles defender Ben Gagnon.
鈥淟ittle slow to start, but we ramped up on our talk. Everyone is just firing, and it feels good out there.鈥
The Grizzlies 鈥 who scored an ALL West-high 14 goals in week 1 鈥 were held to just five. Not helping matters was the fact they lost James Baker (who scored seven in the opener) to injury in Sunday鈥檚 game.
Baker was one of five Grizzlies players with one goal in the contest, alongside Joshua Faria (1-1), Jack Margetson, Garrett Lewis and Erik Forselius. Nash Moog had three assists. Brayden Wandler played the first three quarters in goal with 35 saves on 44 shots while Christian Del Bianco came on in the fourth, finishing with 14 saves on 18 shots as the Grizzlies were outshot 63-44.
Sea Spray 11 Black Fish 8
Sea Spray scored early 鈥 four goals in 9:54 鈥 and then late 鈥 three in 65 seconds 鈥 to make up for the middle portion of the game, defeating the Black Fish 11-8.
The early outburst gave the Sea Spray a 4-0 lead while the late final flurry helped snap an 8-8 tie as they improved to 1-1 with the win. The Black Fish fell to 0-2.
The teams were tied at four at the half and the Black Fish took their first (and only) lead of the contest at 6-4 with goals 34 seconds apart in the early stages of the third quarter. But from that point on, the Sea Spray would outscore their opponent 7-2 to secure the victory.
Thomas Semple鈥檚 hat trick goal with 2:23 to play would stand as the winner while goaltender Marc Rippberger delivered a beautiful breakaway pass to Joshua Yachney for the two-goal lead.
鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 get any chances. Some penalties and stuff slowed the flow of the game a bit. Once we were playing 5-on-5, our D and goaltending were amazing. That makes the game a little bit easier,鈥 said Sea Spray coach Ian Paterson.
The Sea Spray won despite being outshot 58-47 with Rippberger finishing with 50 saves in his first full ALL game.
鈥淗e made the big saves when we needed them and obviously that pass (on the 10th goal) was huge,鈥 Paterson said, referencing Rippberger鈥檚 breakout pass while his team was short-handed and nursing a late one-goal lead.
Rippberger deflected credit to his teammates as they allowed him to see the bulk of the Black Fish shot attempts.
鈥淭hey were challenging pretty much every shot and making it super easy on my part. When you can see the stick and where they are going to shoot, it gives you an idea of where they are trying to go,鈥 Rippberger said.
In addition to Semple鈥檚 three goals while Seamus Bankier (2-2) and James Rahe (2-1) each had two-goal games. Eli Batt (1-1), Tyrell Hamer-Jackson, Levi Touhey and Yachney chipped in with a goal apiece.
For the Black Fish, Brian Gillis paced the attack with two goals and five points with Drew Andre adding a hat trick, Rhys Porteous (1-2), Cameron Ickert (1-1) and Temeke7 Gottfriedsen (1-0) had the other Black Fish goals.
Darian Claxton stopped 36 of 47 shots.
All four teams are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 24 with the Black Fish playing the Shooting Eagles at 1 p.m. while the Sea Spray and Grizzlies square off at 4 p.m.
