Coaches land in Eagles nest

Kwantlen names new men's and women's basketball coaches

Two new people, both with ties to Simon Fraser University,  will lead the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles basketball programs next season.

Stefon Wilson has been tapped head coach of the men鈥檚 program, while Dan Nayebzadeh is in charge of the women鈥檚 program.

Wilson, originally from Detroit, played at Sault Ste. Marie鈥檚 Algoma University and was an assistant coach at Simon Fraser last season.

鈥淚 value winning in every aspect of life and I plan in instilling those same values in my team both on and off the court,鈥 he said.

Nayebzadeh, from White Rock, was an assistant coach with the International Basketball League鈥檚 B.C. Titans in 2009, and last year was the head coach of Basketball B.C.鈥檚 Elite Development Program at the U16 level.

Most recently, he has assisted the Canadian national team coaches at the Canadian Centre for Performance and Regional Training Centre. He was also an assistant with the SFU women鈥檚 team.

鈥淚 am certain that my experiences under the tutelage of Bruce Langford at Simon Fraser University and the knowledge acquired from such renowned coaches as Allison and Mike McNeill, will assist me in creating a program that the Kwantlen community will be proud of,鈥 Nayebzadeh said.

The women鈥檚 program is hosting an identification camp for potential players on Sunday (April 17) at 2 p.m. at the school鈥檚 Surrey campus (12666 72 Ave.) It is open to all female basketball players Grade 11 and older.
