Led by goaltender Michael Lauriente, the Brookswood Bobcats went from the fifth seed to the championship.
The 鈥機ats varsity hockey team pulled off a third consecutive upset to win the Burns Madden Cup as the 91原创 District hockey championships. It is the first time Brookswood has won the Cup since 2007.
The Bobcats rode stellar goaltending in the post-season with Lauriente allowing six goals over the final three games, including a 4-0 shutout in the championship final against the 91原创 Fundamental Titans.
The title game was June 8 at 91原创 Sportsplex.
Brookswood, which posted a losing record (2-3-1) during the regular season, found their game when it mattered most, going a perfect 3-0 in the playoffs.
Quintan Morley and Dominic Forman put Brookswood up 2-0 after one period and then after the 鈥機ats killed off three minor penalties, Parker Kubilius scored to give the team a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame.
With the Titans pushing to get back in the game, Mathieu Melanson found the empty net to seal the victory.
Brookswood made the final four after doubling the Mountain Eagles 4-2, earning themselves a semifinal date against the first-place 91原创 Saints. The Saints had gone 5-0-1 during the regular season, including an 8-1 drubbing of the 鈥機ats earlier in the season.
The Saints led the rematch 4-2 late in the third but the 鈥機ats scored twice to force overtime and after Brookswood hung on during three-on-three overtime against the speedier 鈥� and deeper 鈥� Saints, the game went to a shootout.
Lauriente came up with two saves on three shooters while Sloan Kelly and Melanson both found the back of the net for Brookswood.
