The Abbotsford Canucks made an improbable three-goal comeback in the game’s last four minutes to send it to overtime, but the Calgary Wranglers spoiled the Abbotsford Centre party for the second straight night with a 7-6 win on Saturday (Oct. 21).

Abbotsford trailed 6-3 after Martin Pospisil’s goal at 12:10 of the third, but once the Canucks received their sixth power play the offensive explosion began.

Nils Aman made it a 6-4 at 16:01 and Vasily Podkolzin rifled a one-timer past Calgary goalie Dustin Wolf with the Abbotsford goalie pulled at 17:05 to suddenly make it a one-goal game. Aman then miraculously tied the game up with his hat trick goal at 18:30.

The three-on-three overtime followed and Pospisil fooled Arturs Silovs blocker side to give Calgary two more points in Abbotsford.

The game started similar to Friday’s game, with Abbotsford scoring early. Sheldon Dries scored his first just 24 seconds into the game, but Ilya Solovyov tied the game up at 4:18. Abbotsford had three power play opportunities in the first and outshot Calgary 18-8 but could only beat Wolf once.

The teams traded goals in the second, with Abbotsford captain Chase Wouters putting the Canucks up 2-1 at 6:39. Calgary replied just 25 seconds later though. Aman potted his first goal of the game at 14:17, but Calgary again replied minutes later and the game was tied at three heading into the second.

Calgary then exploded for three goals in the first 12 minutes of the third, with goals from Clark Bishop, Adam Klapka and Pospisil. Abbotsford battled back with three of their own to earn a single point in the extra frame.

Aman, Podkolzin and Bains both had three-point nights for Abbotsford. Christian Wolanin added two helpers. Abbotsford outshot Calgary 40-37 in the win, with Aman, Podkolzin and Matt Irwin all recording five shots.

Filip Johansson, Cole McWard and Josh Bloom all finished the game at -3, while Wolanin was a +3. Silovs continues a somewhat slow start to the season. His save percentage is at .862 and his goals against average is now at 4.51 after three games.

Abbotsford did play without Tristen Nielsen, who was injured on Friday and left the game in the third period.

The Canucks next host the Colorado Eagles on Tuesday (Oct. 24) and Wednesday (Oct. 25). Both games begin at 7 p.m.
