When Aldergrove鈥檚 Cassidy Buchanan was playing basketball at Betty Gilbert school, there weren鈥檛 enough girls to form a team, so she played on the the boys鈥 team.
鈥淎ll my guy friends,鈥 she laughed.
Buchanan didn鈥檛 set out to be a star basketball player.
鈥淚 just did it for fun in Grades 6 and 7,鈥 Buchanan recalled.
鈥淚 loved soccer, that was my passion.鈥
But she was very good at basketball, and by grade 8, she decided to make it her focus.
鈥淚t had a different competitive edge that I love,鈥 Buchanan explained.
At the time, she also played basketball for Aldergrove Community Secondary School, before switching schools to Brookswood, with its legendary girls basketball program.

Since then, the 5鈥10鈥 guard has amassed a long list of athletic accomplishments that include being named an All-Star at the AAA seniors girls basketball provincial championships; MVP at the Eastern Fraser Valley senior girls basketball championships, where Brookswood won the championship game; and winning bronze at the U15 Girls National Championships in 2019.

Buchanan was also selected to play on the U18 Team BC which will be competing at the Canada Summer Games in August.
Buchanan is often asked if she plans to play professional basketball, and her answers have been noncommittal.
鈥淭he goal had always been to get to university,鈥 said Buchanan, who graduated Brookswood with honours.
In February, she accomplished her goal, when Trinity Western University (TWU) in 91原创 announced her signing.
Buchanan, who will be studying kinesiology, called TWU 鈥渢he best fit for me.鈥
鈥淎fter going through the recruiting process and laying out all my options, it became obvious that Trinity Western is the right choice for me,鈥 Buchanan said,
Coach Cheryl Jean-Paul noted Buchanan is coming to Trinity with 鈥済reat experience鈥 at the high school, provincial team, and high performance levels.
鈥淪he is an exceptional leader and athlete who is a student of the game and constantly striving to improve her knowledge and ability,鈥 Jean-Paul commented.
鈥淪he is deliberate in her decision-making and is so mature in how she approaches opportunities,鈥 Jean-Paul observed.
鈥淪he will definitely benefit those around her with her perspective and outlook.鈥
