Alumni tourney a success

Brian Dougherty (#25) goes for the block against Neil McKinley during the first annual Greg Leino Alumni Classic basketball tournament.

Close to $2,000 was raised for a scholarship named after former D.W. Poppy coach and teacher Greg Leino.

Former Poppy students held the first annual Greg Leino Alumni Classic basketball tournament over the weekend, and in the finals, it was a team made up of grads from the 1994-95 classes edging the grads of 1999-2001 58-56 in the championship game.

Jon Fast was the game’s most valuable player, while Neil McKinley won tournament MVP honours.

Leino retired in 2009 after 34 years at the school, but is still involved as a volunteer.

The scholarship, which was first presented last year, is awarded to a Poppy grad who best exemplifies the values Leino taught: excellence in athletics, academics and community.
