The Abbotsford Canucks ruined the American Hockey League return for goalie Jack Campbell, downing the Bakersfield Condors 4-1 at the Abbotsford Centre on Thursday (Nov. 9).

Campbell allowed four goals on 20 shots and the Canucks beat him three times in the second period to cruise to the win.

The former Edmonton Oilers starter, who commands a cap hit of $5 million and is under contract with a modified no trade clause until 2027, was sent placed on waivers by Edmonton on Tuesday (Nov. 7) and joined Bakersfield earlier this week.

The Condors opened the scoring at 2:52 when Seth Griffith beat Canucks goalie Arturs Silovs, but it was all downhill from there for Bakersfield and Campbell.

Nils Aman tied the game up on a shorthanded breakaway at 12:33 of the second period and Sheldon Dries added another shorthanded goal at 2:43 of the second. Aman added another goal from an unusual angle at 9:53 of the second and Marc Gatcomb bought some insurance with a goal at 15:36 of the second.

Both teams recorded 20 shots and returning forward Danila Klimovich led all Canucks with four shots on goal. The game marked Klimovich’s first game since Oct. 14 and he recorded his first point of the season – an assist on Aman’s second goal.

Silovs had another solid performance after a shutout last Saturday (Nov. 4) and stopped 19 of 20 shots. After a sometimes shaky October, the Lativan netminder appears to be rounding into form.

It was also a notable game for Gatcomb, who played on the first line and was effective playing with Arshdeep Bains and Sheldon Dries. He had two shots to go with his goal. Bains collected another point and now has 17 points in 12 games and is tied for the AHL scoring lead. Aman now has a team-high seven goals.

The Canucks were playing without forwards Vasily Podkolzin, Tristen Nielsen, Chase Wouters and Aidan McDonough, who are all believed to be hurt.

Attendance at the AC was a reported 3,610.

The Canucks and Condors meet again inside the AC on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 7 p.m.
