Editor: Re: ‘Who funds the campaigns?’ (The Times, Jan. 14).
Just one day prior to the byelection for school trustee, I received a letter in the mail. The letter happened to be from the president of my union, and it was strongly suggesting that I vote the next day. It also went on to suggest just who I should be voting for.
The day of the byelection, I received an automated phone message with the same reminder. So, if you are wondering who was funding the campaigns, I think you should look no further.
I was not aware that unions were able to use their power to ensure the outcome that best suits them. I hope all members will continue to use their own discretion when voting, and perhaps we should all be more aware of where our union dues are going.
