Editor: As a friend and neighbour of the Figueroas, I was disappointed to read about the recent comments of our MP, Mark Warawa (The Times, Aug. 9).
Jose Figueroa, who came to Canada as a refugee during the civil war in El Salvador, has become one of the many victims of Canada鈥檚 unfair immigration laws and was ordered deported. Not wanting to leave the country of his children鈥檚 birth, he applied for an exemption, and this application is now under review.
Warawa acknowledged that it may take seven to nine years for a decision to be made, during which time Figueroa can remain in the country. But how is living in limbo for that long good for Jose or his family?
He and his wife can鈥檛 become citizens and enjoy the benefits they require and deserve; rather, they have to keep applying for work permits and paying for expensive medical bills. I hope Warawa and the minister of public safety will deal with this situation quickly.
They could resolve it this year, and ensure that justice is done. Justice is more than a political slogan 鈥� it鈥檚 something we believe in as Canadians, so let鈥檚 show it.
