Province should look into Routley school issue

Editor:

This is an open letter to the Hon. George Abbott, minister of education.

Dear Mr. Abbott, I am sincerely requesting that you conduct an investigation as to why a much needed school in the Routley Neighbourhood was not communicated to you by the 91Ô´´ School Board, even when the population in the area supports a school.

In the community plan provided by the Township of 91Ô´´, it clearly stated that a school would be built once the area had been developed and supported a school.

It has been developed for some time now and still continues to be, yet residents in the area were given a notice (just recently) that the land that our school was to be built on is being swapped with a developer/Township to build more townhouses (Development proposal rz100361).

The two closest schools to our area are way over capacity.

This is already hindering students’ right to quality public education.

There are many children who are of school age and even more children who will be entering school in the next few years living in the Routley neighbourhood.

People purchased in the area because they were informed that a school would be built on this site.

There are many young families living in this area.

Currently the catchment area that the school board had decided on requires that our children be taken to a school which is four kilometres away.

That is too far for our children to walk and its not safe at all, as it requires them to cross intersections that are among the top 10 crash sites in 91Ô´´ as listed by the RCMP.

I urge you to please look into this matter as it severly impacts the quality of life of families in the Routley neighbourhood.
