Editor: I was confused with the article (the Times, May 3) referencing a recent Fraser Institute housing report. It seems to indicate that fast approval for housing developments is the goal for a prosperous Township (or City).
Time means money, but time also means a careful process. What is wrong with thoughtful development? What is wrong with taking the time to ensure the proper infrastructure is in place first? What is wrong with collaborating with the school district in advance to align with enrollment numbers? Why is speed the Holy Grail of development?
One only has to look at the myriad of problems faced in Willoughby to see what overly fast development creates - critically overcrowded schools, extreme lack of parking, crowded roadways, nonexistent sidewalks, and a poor services to population ratio.
Development shouldn’t be a race. It shouldn’t be about putting up buildings. What it should be about is building a community.
Let’s not lose sight of that.
