Rather than prevent accidents at intersections, traffic cameras serve as a distraction to drivers, creating a more dangerous situation than if they were not installed, writes Allana Rempel. Black Press file photo

Editor: Before Canadians let the government turn you into cash cows, please look at unbiased research conducted by those not benefiting from red light/speed cameras.

These revenue machines are proven to increase accidents as people are distracted watching their speed/light change and not their surroundings — including pedestrians — or slamming on the brakes, which is more dangerous here given the winter conditions.

They also spread like the plague. In Sydney, Australia there were 12 cameras in a 10-km radius of my house, and as the number of cameras increased, so did the accidents. I saw most within 500 metres of a camera.

Don’t be fooled by the propaganda. These cameras are nothing but another tax on drivers. Fix ICBC operations, allow private companies in. Stop them now before it’s too late.

Allana Rempel,

Murrayville
