Dear Editor,
Some personal views on tariffs and recent escalation.
It will be interesting to see where all the provinces end up standing and acting on the current tariff issue and war.
Currently the strongest supporters of Canada are B.C., Ontario, Quebec, Maritimes, Newfoundland, and Manitoba (Manitobans haven鈥檛 really said much).
Both Ontario and B.C. have taken decisive action, while Quebec is looking at steps re: electricity. These provinces will be the first to experience any economic pain.
Quietest Canadians are Saskatchewan and last Alberta. In the case of Smith from Alberta she is the most closely aligned with Trump/right philosophy as well as her personal dislike of Central Canada and her unspoken personal agenda to become president of Alberta (you can read into that what you want). Where will the people of Alberta/Saskatchewan stand if energy/oil/potash come into prominent play and the Alberta/Saskatchewan citizens need to pay an economic price, like the rest of Canada?
My bet is Uncle Moe from Saskatchewan (potash) will eventually come stand with Canada, while Smith will (if she does, but not a given) come kicking and screaming thus continually weakening the Canadian overall position. She will probably demand some concessions from Canada.
What is really interesting is the West including B.C., continually has complained about Quebec but look at who is standing on the front lines with other Canadian provinces 鈥 Quebec, Quebec, Quebec!
Last but not least, First Nations are also front and centre with Canada and this is extremely important and significant. Remember who captured Fort Detroit in the war of 1812-14 without a shot being fired and a white flag being shown by the Americans 鈥 First Nations Tecumseh.
UK/Commonwealth/NATO:
As I have said numerous times, Canada gave tens of thousands of lives fighting their wars in Europe over the last 150 years because of a belief in 鈥渨hat is right and just鈥 (if that can be said about any war), a shared history and alliances with the U.K. and other European nations to come to their support in times of crisis 鈥 we did not back away but stood shoulder to shoulder.
Look at where we are now. The U.K. continues to 鈥渨easel鈥 about their position and support for Canada in this our war. The government of the U.K. continually hides behind Chamberlain type 鈥渨ords鈥 and is afraid to stand up publicly and be counted, like Canada did for them so many times in the past. They are only concerned with their economic 鈥渉ide鈥 and do not recognize their true friends.
King Charles continues to be 鈥渕um,鈥 always hiding behind the catch-all comment 鈥渢he king does not comment on such matters鈥 鈥 bull. If this was the U.K., that would not be the case, you can bet your dollar.
Prince William is head of the Commonwealth at the vehement demand of Queen Elizabeth before she passed away, but has shown no leadership whatsoever. Time for him to stand on his own two feet.
As far as NATO/UK/European nations are concerned, they are all watching to see how Canada鈥檚 fight proceeds before they take any real positive steps in support of Canada, if ever. We are the sacrificial lamb as far as they are concerned.
Bottom line is that within the next 10 years, Canada will abandon the Commonwealth/U.K. if they continue to take a passive approach in support of Canada in our war.
In the past, I have often referred to these epistles as my 鈥渞ants.鈥 But that is not the case today.
We are dealing with an irrational U.S. president and cabinet/entourage of the most economically and militarily powerful country in the world, a cowardly U.S. political structure at both the national and state level, a fundamentally corrupt legal system (where is the rule of law) and a population who seems enchanted by a snake oil salesman who has no moral base.
Mark my words, if Trump is healthy in four years, he will try to circumvent the U.S. constitution and be declared president for life.
As I have previously said, and Justin Trudeau recently said, and is echoed by many federal and provincial leaders of all political stripes: Trump and the U.S. real objective is to subvert Canada by whatever means for our water, minerals, energy, Arctic, and our land. He does not give a damn about Canada鈥檚 people or nationhood.
This is a real war, but Canada will remain the true north strong and free.
Prediction: Next Canadian election will result in a minority government, which will weaken Canada鈥檚 dealings with U.S.
