Editor: The opinion sounded in your paper (the Times , Aug. 11) regarding the shocking waste of fresh foods in our province is right on.

Kudos to the Cowichan Food Security Coalition for stepping up and doing something about it.

You just have to head south of Highway 10 later in the fall on 148 Street, 176 Street 168 Street, 152 Street or east/west on 40 Avenue to see multiple acres of unharvested vegetables like carrots and squash, sitting in the fields 鈥 to stay there and rot over winter鈥 to become very concerned.

Washington State had a program called 鈥済leaners鈥 that organized opportunities for low income folks to enter fields like those mentioned and harvest what they wanted under the supervision of the farmer and the Gleaner representative.

It would be a very valuable asset to our communities and the food banks to have a program like that in place to minimize this incredible waste of resources.

R. Drake,
