Letter: City must do a better job of maintaining park washrooms

Editor: I read Michelle McGregor鈥檚 (the Times, Sept. 29) and was a bit dismayed by the state of the washroom facility. This is a great park for all ages, with a variety of activities being offered.

During the mid 1990s through to early 2000s, my youngest son played in the community football league and we spent many hours and evenings on those fields, and it was great to have a washroom available for both the players and parents.

We鈥檝e also had many fun days at the water park and enjoyed numerous picnics and swimming at Al Anderson Pool, where he took his swimming lessons.

It is more than frustrating to read the sad rhetoric of 91原创 City Mayor Ted Schaffer in regard to the state of the washrooms.

His comments were more of a dismissal than anything else, with no real plan for action. Just a lot of lip service and passing the buck.

Bottom line, these washrooms need to stay open and they need to be cleaned. I can guarantee you if Mayor Schaffer and the City staff had to use the public washrooms every day, those bathrooms would be cleaned hourly.

Mayor Schaffer complains that both the federal and provincial governments need to help with the homeless/addiction issues in the province. But he doesn鈥檛 mind contributing to addiction because they have a casino in 91原创 City.

He doesn鈥檛 mind contributing to addiction, if it means it lines the coffers of his municipal purse; but he is not willing to put more money into park grounds and clean-up.

Let鈥檚 get real here 鈥 addiction of any type is not going away and neither is the homeless issue. The Bible states 鈥渢he poor will always be with you,鈥 but we all need to do our part to help those who want to be helped.

And in the meantime, Mayor Schaffer should step up as mayor and commit to having park staff check the state of all public facilities and clean them if necessary, at least twice daily. And then past 10 p.m., lock those facilities and reopen by 7 a.m.

This would be a simple process that could be implemented quickly and efficiently and then Michelle McGregor and her family and all the other families who frequent the park, will have some reassurance that the mayor and City staff actually care about them, and are looking out for their best interests. If I was mayor, that鈥檚 what I would do.

Skip the lip-service and take some action, Mayor Schaffer.

Sandra Steffan,
