LETTER: Canada Day a chance to ponder nation's place in world

91原创 resident would like to see an end to "political correctness and that woke mentality"

Dear Editor,
Well Canada Day was celebrated, and we should all be proud; as were our parents鈥 generation who protected this country鈥檚 democracy and way of life during the Second World War.
They had reason to be proud; they pulled more than their weight during the war, they paid off the war debt in less than five years, the Canadian dollar was worth more than the U.S. dollar, and the difference between 鈥渞ight and wrong鈥 was clear and readily apparent.
鈥榃ork ethic鈥 was a legitimate and desirable trait. And Canada had a world reputation of being a destination of choice in which to live.
In this, the third decade of this millennia, things sure have changed in this country where political correctness and the 'woke' mentality have run amok鈥 not for the better, I鈥檓 afraid. Our national debt has been doubled in just the last nine years. That is, the current prime minister has put us in debt more than all of the prime ministers combined since 1867.
Our country is not pulling its weight in the West鈥檚 security, ie. NATO. Respective Conservative and Liberal governments have been starving our military of funds and have not met Canada鈥檚 NATO commitments for a number of years. Our current prime minister is proud of that fact, hmmmm?
The homelessness, the cost of housing, inflation, non-existent health care, the so-called justice system, the lavish spending, the hypocrisy of the current government.
Recently our government has caused me to be ashamed for this nation.
The prime minister invited a Nazi into our House of Commons and our political representatives gave him a standing ovation as he fought the Russians in the Ukraine during the Second World War. Of course the Russians [then known as the Soviet Union] were our allies during the Second  World War and that they then fought the Nazis.
All of our politicians [including the Conservatives] should be required to take a Canadian history course before they take their seat in Parliament. Canada was the 鈥渓aughing stock鈥 of the world (not to mention a plus for Russia鈥檚 [Putin鈥檚] propaganda machine).
It appears that the Conservatives will be in power soon. I sure hope that [Pierre] Poilievre conducts himself more appropriately in the world forum than did the current prime minister; and that Canada becomes more of a world citizen than the laughing stock it now is.
I dearly want this country to be a leader in the world. It would be nice to do away with 鈥減olitical correctness鈥 and that 鈥渨oke鈥 mentality which seems to dominate the 鈥渢alking heads鈥 and [small L] liberal class in this country.
Thanks for listening to me vent.
Gordo Weitzel, Murrayville
