91Ô´´ City residents, wake up and vote this year

Editor: Wake up, citizens of 91Ô´´ City. Get out and vote in the next election.

Here are a few facts to ponder on. With the upgrade of 208 Street, council overspent by $1.3 million. There was no apology or information, except the city engineer said it had been settled. Oh yes, our taxes were raised.

On the 196 Street overpass project, the mayor and councillors did not have the courage to vote final approval in a public meeting. Instead, they went behind closed doors and voted. These people were voted to listen to citizens, and try and work out a good deal. This is far from a good deal.

The City is now in gridlock with cars, and it is going to be twice as bad when 34-plus trains come through each day. They will not only block one intersection at a time — it will be all three.

Sooner or later, there will be a disaster. In recent years, there have been several train incidents along Glover Road and, back in the 1970s, a coal train derailed in Milner. In more recent years, a container train struck a truck at Smith Crescent and derailed.

To Mayor Peter Fassbender, I say you did not listen to the people. You had your mind made up before the first information meeting was held. A number of options were presented, but you didn’t listen. You may have looked at them, but that was all. Yes, we feel you do not care.

Some of the townhouse units at Huntsfield Green are just metres from the fence line. They are built on concrete foundations, in sand- and clay-filled areas. This ground is very wet at times.

When the road is built right behind these units, there will be pounding and vibration going on all the time. What will happen on the adjacent land?

The $8.3 million that 91Ô´´ City is spending on this road could have done wonders for us. We would have got an overpass at some stage, and some decent transportation and infrastructure which would bring us up to modern times.

It was noted at the meetings that even if the City council did not vote for the overpasses, they would go ahead anyway,

As far as I can see, 91Ô´´ City gets very little benefit out of the 196 Street project. Surrey comes out the winner, as do the railways, which by the way, put very little towards the deal.
