Editor: It is interesting that columnist Tom Fletcher (The Times, Sept. 20) doesn鈥檛 explain what鈥檚 wrong with 鈥淎merican-style politics鈥 although he references it throughout his article.
He writes: 鈥淭he Americanization of Canadian and B.C. politics is gathering speed鈥 and 鈥渢he U.S. tactic of鈥 (this after seven paragraphs about BC and Canadian politicians).
He reveals the secret 鈥渁 similar style . . . may have been produced in Toronto.鈥
Lastly, Fletcher devalues B.C.鈥檚 hard-won but effective direct democracy, comparing it to a 鈥淐alifornia-style tax revolt.鈥
I agree with his sentiments, but listen to reason.
We Canadians, North American though we are, prefer to define ourselves on the world鈥檚 scale as 鈥渘ot Americans.鈥 Fair enough, we aren鈥檛.
However, true Canadians should have the humility and insight to admit that part of our heritage is due to a friendly neighbour . That neighbour is the greatest nation the history of the world has ever witnessed.
