VIDEO: Vigil for shooting victims held in 91原创 City

鈥楾hese are my people鈥 says organizer, a former homeless person

A vigil for the victims of the 91原创 shootings drew around 100 people to Innes Corners Plaza in 91原创 City to light candles, lay wreaths and hold a moment of silence.

It was a lot more than Alyssa Cappon and her mother Bonnie had thought would show up when they organized the event.

鈥淲e didn鈥檛 expect so many people to be here, we honestly just thought it was just going to be our families,鈥 Cappon told the crowd.

For her, it was very much a personal issue.

鈥淚, myself, was a homeless person for many years,鈥 Cappon told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥滻鈥檓 in recovery from a really severe drug addiction,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚 turned my life around. So these are my people.鈥

Candles and flowers were set out in front of signs that read 鈥渕ay the longtime sun shine upon you, all love surround you, please know we care about you鈥 and 鈥渓et there be peace on earth.鈥

Cappon said it was 鈥渏ust to show the people that are out here every day, that live out here [on the street], that we support them, that we are thinking about them in this time.鈥

She was surprised, but also encouraged, by the bigger-than-expected turnout.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really nice to see there are people there who are willing to support this population,鈥 she remarked.

After the three minutes of silence ended, Cappon thanked those who attended, calling the shootings 鈥渁 new kind of violence for 91原创.鈥

A woman who sat quietly weeping during the moment of silence didn鈥檛 want to give her name, but was willing to have her picture taken, and to be interviewed.

She explained that she always thought of herself as a tough person, but the horror of the shootings had overwhelmed her.

鈥淚鈥檓 absolutely broken,鈥 she said, as tears filled her eyes.
