Homeless people told the 91原创 Advance Times the fatal shootings of two people on Monday, July 25, represented an escalation of the harassment they already endure, and they are concerned there will be more such incidents.
Stephan Steinfest, 55, originally from Aldergrove, has been living on the street in 91原创 City for the last two months.
鈥淚ts going to happen again,鈥 Steinfest predicted.
鈥淚 knew it was coming, and it鈥檚 coming again.鈥
He was planning to spend the night outside a local community police station.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to sleep at the police station, up there in the front yard. Safest place there is,鈥 Steinfest told the 91原创 Advance Times. 鈥淚 was at the fire department last night.鈥
An emotional Anita Soderquist from Vineyard Church, who works with the homeless, was horrified by the news.
鈥淚鈥檓 very hurt by what happened today,鈥 Soderquist commented.
鈥淚 know so many of the homeless people because I work with them, and my ex-husband is on the street part-time, and it breaks my heart to know that people are out there knocking off my friends.鈥
A homeless man who didn鈥檛 want his name used or his picture taken claimed to have been in the area and fled when he heard shots fired in the parking lot of the Cascades casino.
鈥淚 heard the shell casings hit the ground,鈥 the man told the 91原创 Advance Times.
鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 sticking around.鈥
He said he didn鈥檛 see anything, but said it sounded like the weapon may have been a bolt-action rifle.
鈥淚 had my legal firearms licence when I was 19,鈥 the man said.
鈥淚鈥檝e owned 20 weapons. I know what it sounds like.鈥
Ask if he felt threatened, the man said it would depend on whether it was a targeted attack against specific individuals.
鈥淪ometimes, there are groups of people who do [illegal] things together,鈥 he speculated.
鈥淚f it was completely random, and the homeless people didn鈥檛 do anything, I鈥檇 be concerned.鈥
Another homeless man. who was sitting in the shade of a tree not far from the shooting scene outside the Casino, said harassment for being homeless was nothing new, with vigilantes posting pictures of homeless people to social media.
鈥淭he community鈥檚 been targeting homeless people for a while,鈥 remarked the man, who declined to give his name.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not new. What鈥檚 new is people are taking shots with bullets instead of their phones.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 an everyday thing,鈥漚nother homeless man, who also wished to be anonymous, said.
