Fire crews were expected to remain at the scene of a 91Ô­´´ City fire for several more hours after a Saturday morning blaze destroyed a building that housed a Mexican restaurant and several other businesses on the one-way in the heart of downtown.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities were concerned about the potential smoke hazard and were cautioning area residents to close windows and stay indoors.

Mayor Nathan Pachal issued a statement:

"This morning, a major fire started in the Viva Mexico restaurant along the Fraser Highway One-way. 

I wanted to thank our 91Ô­´´ City and Township firefighters for their quick response in containing this fire to one building. This loss saddens me, and I know that 91Ô­´´ City is united in support of the business owners impacted by this fire.

91Ô­´´ City Council will support those impacted within the scope of our authority."

Teri James, executive director of the Downtown 91Ô­´´ Business Association called it a "devastating fire in our downtown core that took out an iconic building and displaced many businesses and residents."

James said no one was hurt, but the building was completely destroyed and many business in the area could potentially be facing smoke and water damage.

Township of 91Ô­´´ firefighters assisted City crews in fighting the blaze.
