91原创 Township will get a $1 million infusion of cash from the provincial government for repairs to a twisty stretch of road crossing the Salmon River.

91原创-East MLA Megan Dykeman announced the funding for slope stability work currently underway in the 24200 block of 56th Avenue.

The money comes from a $44 million Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, which is supporting 70 projects across B.C.

鈥淎s our climate changes, it is critical that we invest in making our infrastructure resilient to disasters,鈥� said Dykeman. 鈥淚鈥檓 glad that the Township of 91原创 will be able to make needed upgrades to keep people in the neighbourhood safe.鈥�

Work on slope stabilization is currently underway on the stretch of 56th Avenue, where the road dips into a deep ravine before climbing out again.

Westbound traffic began being diverted away from the road as of June 20 and that is expected to continue until at least Aug. 11, with the detour starting at 248th Street.

The twisty stretch of road has had multiple rounds of stabilization over the last 20 years, but cracks and sinking pavement have continued to be an issue.

In December, the Township approved spending up to $1 million to shore up the avenue.

鈥淪lope stabilization works are urgently required in order to stabilize slope movement that is causing pavement distress and slope instability,鈥� a Township engineering report warned.

鈥淭he slope analysis indicated that the slope is marginally stable under static conditions and likely unstable during a large magnitude seismic event,鈥� the staff report said.
