An 87-year-old 91原创 man was killed instantly and his wife, also in her 80s, is in critical condition in hospital after a head-on collision at the intersection of Robertson Crescent and 264 Street on Monday.

The results of the preliminary investigation indicate that around 5 p.m. there was an unknown northbound vehicle stopped at the intersection, waiting for southbound traffic to clear to make a left turn onto Robertson Crescent.

This vehicle didn鈥檛 remain at the scene, said 91原创 RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks.

A second vehicle, a Chevrolet commercial van, slowed behind the vehicle making the turn.

A Nissan Rogue, driven by the 87-year-old, came up behind the slowed van and swerved but didn鈥檛 slow. Police believe the driver may have been trying to avoid a rear-end collision.

However, the Rogue still clipped the rear of the van and then went into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 44-year-old 91原创 woman.

The driver of the Rogue died instantly.

His spouse, sitting in the passenger seat, suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, said Marks.

The 44-year-old driver of the Tacoma was also taken to hospital with serious injuries, not believed to be life-threatening.  Both women remain in hospital.  The two men in the work van were uninjured.

The deceased was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision, said police.

鈥淲hile it is unknown if wearing it would have saved his life, it is possible,鈥� said Marks. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Mechanical inspections are being conducted on all involved vehicles.
