TransLink joined federal and provincial politicians to announce an expansion of the West Coast Express back to pre-COVID service levels on Friday, June 16.

In a press conference at Waterfront Station in Vancouver TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn announced the fleet of West Coast Express engines will be refurbished, and the transit authority rolled up the first of the fixed-up trains to serve as a backdrop.

Quinn announced that effective this Monday, June 19, the transit authority will restore WC Express Service to for the first time in three years.

He noted that last month saw 116,000 boardings, which was the highest since the pandemic, and a 55 per cent increase from May of 2022.

The fleet refurbishing will reduce engine emissions by up to 50 per cent, and expand their lifespan by up to 15 years.

He noted the ongoing refurbishment project supported by provincial and federal governments.

鈥淲e want to provide cleaner transit options, and lower emissions,鈥� said D鈥橢ith, 鈥渁nd people need public transit that is affordable and convenient, so they can leave their cars at home.鈥�

Pitt Meadows Mayor Nicole MacDonald lauded West Coast Express as a reliable alternative to driving, providing a 鈥渟tress-free, safe commute,鈥� and 鈥渋ncredible views.鈥�

鈥淚t鈥檚 become an integral part of life in the City of Pitt Meadows, and an essential part of life for many commuters in my community,鈥� said MacDonald. 鈥淚 arguably say it鈥檚 the best way to travel down to the downtown core.鈥�
