Thrift store, cat adoption centre combo possibly coming to B.C.

Abby Cat Daddy announced a new fundraising campaign to help build a thrift store and cat adoption centre.

An Abbotsford cat adoption clinic has big plans on the horizon, which could mean being able to help significantly more felines in the Fraser Valley area.

Logan Bryan, founder of Abby Cat Daddy, recently announced an ambitious goal to open a multipurpose facility in the community that operates as both a thrift store and cat adoption centre.

By having this combination, it will not only better serve the community, but also help make Abby Cat Daddy more self-supporting, explained Bryan.

"The thrift store would help pay for the building itself and the facilities because you can't rely on adoption fees. Adoption fees only cover so much of the cost of caring for cats to get them adopted."

"Hopefully, it would generate enough revenue to be able to put money back into the rescue to support medical cases and things of that nature."

If everything goes according to plan, the facility might be able to expand its services even further to include some kind of cat food bank.

"That way people can keep their cats in home rather than being in a position where they can't care for their cat, even though it might be temporary because they're between jobs or moving and can't afford the food and litter," Bryan said.

A facility like this is becoming more necessary as the number of surrenders and length of foster stays before adoption continue to increase.

"Our current average days in care is 243 when previously it hovered around 100 days," Bryan said.

Since first opening in 2022, Abby Cat Daddy has helped approximately 350 cats get adopted, with many others being spayed or neutered.

Creating such an all-encompassing facility is not cheap, explained Bryan, with a minimum fundraising goal of $60,000 in order to make this a reality.

"There are lots of costs associated with opening any business," he said. "It is more than I have ever fundraised in my life, and it's a terrifying number."

"The funds of this budget are for lease payments – at least 8 months of payments, but if we have more, even better – and renovations."

Bryan said he has witnessed over and over again the generosity of Abbotsford and its surrounding communities, and is hopeful that the fundraising goal will be met within the next four months.

In order to help reach this $60,000 goal, Abby Cat Daddy is running a few fundraising programs, including a 50/50 draw, which is selling tickets until midnight on New Year's Eve.

There is also an ongoing recycling depot program, which invites people to bring their empty bottles to any Return-It Express centres and print off tags for their bags using the Abby Cat Daddy account number 778-655-6833. Doing so will give the bottle deposit money to the feline advocate society.

Bryan said that there will be several other fundraising initiatives in the new year, with the group planning to announce some exciting details in January. The non-profit also hopes to take advantage of grants to help reach the lofty $60,000 goal and potentially even get to the stretch goal of $100,000.

"If anyone has any ideas, wants to make a donation, or help us in any way, please let us know," Bryan said. "Reach out to us on Messenger or email us at rescue@theabbycatdaddy.ca."
