Thousands take part in year-round schooling survey

Deadline to participate is Feb. 28, and more responses are welcome.

A significant number of 91原创 residents have let their voices be heard over whether to change to year-round schooling, said 91原创 school superintendent Suzanne Hoffman at Tuesday's board meeting.

"Close to 6,000 responses to our online survey so far," said Hoffman. "We are pleased with that."

The first open house on the three options was attended by 140 people and the second open house saw around 50, she said.

Students are also weighing in, she said. Resident have until Thursday (today) to fill out the survey.

At the March 12 board of education meeting, trustees will vote on which option to approve for the school calendar.

The three options are: to keep the calendar as is; to create year-round schooling with a long break at winter and one in summer, or to have several shorter breaks throughout the year.

Hoffman said they have received feedback from staff and administration, teachers, the union, and Parent Advisory Councils. Secondary school principals have held assemblies asking the opinions of students. They have also asked other districts what they are doing. Most responded that they are waiting to look at changes.

Hoffman said the Ministry of Education prefers year-round schooling.

She also said on Tuesday, that lots of lessons have been learned.

"The impact of social media has been a learning curve for staff," she said.

A small group of concerned parents wanting to preserve summers for children have been prolific in tweets and links to research favouring the current calendar.
