More than 1,500 teachers marched from a rally held outside the 91原创 Events Centre on Wednesday to the office of Aldergrove-Fort 91原创 MLA Rich Coleman's office, where they laid pink wreaths at his door.

"We will lay wreaths at Rich Coleman's door to send a message we hope he hears," said Gail Chaddock-Costello, president of the 91原创 Teachers Association, at a rally held before the march.

"We lay wreaths when something sad happens. The passage of Bill 22 is a death knell to public education as we know it. The pink symbolizes the bullying tactics they are using with Bill 22."

It may be back to the classrooms for teachers on Thursday, but it won't be business as usual, Chaddock-Costello told the massive crowd of teachers who gathered for the rally that took place at 11 a.m.

She told teachers it will be "bell-to-bell days," where they shouldn't give up their lunch hours or stay late.

"If the government is looking for volunteer work, let them do it," said Chaddock-Costello.

At the rally, B.C. Teachers Federation president Susan Lambert told the teachers the fight is not over.

"We will resist if Bill 22 if it is put through," said Lambert. "We must, for our children and for our grandchildren and for public education. "We will continue to fight against this cynical and hypocritical bill."

CUPE and BCGEU members also came out in force to support their union brothers and sisters.

BC Federation of Labour president Barry O'Neil wore a pink scarf at the rally and told the crowd that the biggest breaches of Canadian law are being made by this government, as it continues to ignore labour laws.

"We haven't seen this kind of government in Canada for a long time," said O'Neil. Union leaders said the B.C. Liberals have a terrible reputation for ripping up contracts and being found guilty of labour infractions.

If Bill 22 passes, there will be a six month cooling off period that would make it illegal and costly for teachers to strike, fining them nearly $500 per day.

It also includes new formats for how teachers can teach and includes a net-zero salary increase.

The teachers are looking for a 15 per cent raise over three years, but they also want more help with special needs students and to see classroom sizes kept at a reasonable level.

Education Minister George Abbott said a mediator will be appointed to work with class composition and special needs funding, but wages are not negotiable.
