Provincial party leaders to speak in 91原创 this month

Greater 91原创 Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring series of Leadership Luncheons.

The leaders of three major provincial parties will all speak in 91原创 this month, as part of a Leadership Luncheon series presented by the Greater 91原创 Chamber of Commerce.

The luncheons are open to the public, and are being organized as part of a larger campaign by the chamber to boost voter knowledge and participation, and fight the growing trend of voter apathy.

The 鈥淵our Vote 鈥 Your Voice鈥 campaign will also include two all-candidates meetings for candidates in the provincial ridings of 91原创 and Fort 91原创-Aldergrove, which will be held during the provincial election campaign.

The meeting for the 91原创 riding is scheduled for April 25, while the Fort 91原创-Aldergrove meeting is scheduled for April 24.

Chamber president Angie Quaale and executive director Lynn Whitehouse emphasize the need to have more people participate in voting, as it is a crucial part of a democratic system. Voter turnout in federal and provincial elections has been falling over the past 30 years. In the last provicial election, turnout was just under 51 per cent. In 1983, the turnout was 70 per cent.

John Cummins, leader of the provincial Conservatives, will be the first speaker in the luncheon series. He will be at Newlands Golf Club on Friday, March 15.

All three luncheons will be held in the Regency Room at Newlands. They will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include a moderated question and answer session.

Cummins will be followed  by NDP leader Adrian Dix, who will speak on Monday, March 18. Premier Christy Clark, leader of the BC Liberals, has stated she will take part, but the date for her speech has not yet been confirmed.

Tickets for all three lunches, which include soup, sandwich, dessert and coffee or tea, are $75 plus HST. Tickets for individual luncheons will be $35 each, plus HST. Reservations are required an  must be made through the chamber office at 604-530-6656 or by email to info@langleychamber.com.

The cancellation deadline for tickets will be 24 hours prior to the event.
