New Westminster police is warning the public its non-emergency line is currently being spoofed by fraudsters.
The New Westminster Police Department put out a release Wednesday (April 9) that its non-emergency number, 604-525-5411, is being used by fraudsters to get people's personal information. Police say the fraudsters are impersonating officers and during the call may use an officer's name and badge number.
Police added the fraudsters can use certain technologies to imitate an incoming phone call from the the department's non-emergency line. If these calls are answered, victims can be fooled into giving away personal and sensitive information.
It is recommended to not give away any sensitive information over the phone to people you cannot confirm the identity of. Police recommend to end the call as soon as possible.
鈥淎pproximately thirty people this morning have called us about suspicious calls from someone claiming to be one of our officers.鈥 Sergeant Andrew Leaver said, noting some callers were from as far away as Toronto.
The New Westminster Police Department is monitoring the situation.
