Pitt Meadows honours Mountie with new youth centre

Constable Rick O'Brien Youth Lounge was unveiled July 25

Hundreds gathered at the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre on Thursday to witness the grand unveiling of the new youth centre.

Named the Constable Rick O'Brien Youth Lounge, this facility honours the fallen Ridge Meadows RCMP officer who lost his life in the line of duty last September.

O'Brien's wife, Nicole Longeacre-O'Brien, was one of several speakers at the event and said that having the youth lounge named after her husband was a very fitting tribute to the late constable.

"Rick loved coming here when he worked in Pitt Meadows, and believed that building trust between youth and law enforcement could be as simple as sharing a laugh or a game of basketball," said Longeacre-O'Brien.

"That's why the Constable Rick O'Brien Youth Lounge is all about fun, friendship, and community. It's more than just a place to hang out, it's a hub of excitement, creativity, and connection."

Pitt Meadows Mayor Nicole MacDonald was delighted to be able to unveil the new facility and help cut the ribbon before dozens of kids entered the building to enjoy the wide range of video games and table games within the youth lounge.

"As a city, we hope this new name and updated space helps us reflect on the person that Const. O'Brien was, as well as his deep devotion to engaging and working with youth," said MacDonald.

While kids were playing games inside of the youth lounge, there was also plenty happening outside on the newly refurbished basketball court, with several Pitt Meadows firefighters serving free barbecue to those who wanted it.
